Life Story for Dorothy Mae Williams (Leggett)

Mother Dorothy Mae Williams, 78, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away peacefully on September 30, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. Dorothy Williams was born in Monroe County, Alabama on May 25, 1939, to the late Willie Lucille and Robert Joel Leggett. She was preceded in death by her parents and two of her brothers, Robert Curtis Leggett and Alexander Leggett.

Dorothy had a thirst for learning and graduated from Douglasville High School in 1958. She took computer courses at the North Baldwin Center for Technology and, also, received an Associate’s Degree in Biblical Theology from O.L. Meadows School of Ministry in 2017. She was employed for most of her working career at Manor Slacks as an assembler and later served as a private sitter until her health declined. Her many interests and hobbies included playing baseball and basketball, listening to and writing music, traveling, baking, cooking, reading, laughing, making freeze cups for the Douglasville community, and spending time with her husband, children, and grandchildren.

Dorothy met and married the love of her life, Billy Gean Williams, also known as Paw-Paw, in 1958 and to this union five adorable children were born. Everyone who came into contact with Dorothy knew that she was loving, caring, nurturing, and most of all, sweet. She was affectionately known as Sweetie to her husband, Mother to her children, and Granny to her grandchildren.

She began her journey to Christ at a young age attending Grovehill Baptist Church (Uriah, AL) and Union Baptist Church (Bay Minette, AL). This journey led her to confess faith in Christ in 1968 at Little Mission (Bay Minette) Church of God in Christ in Bay Minette, AL. She immediately became an active member serving as a choir director, program coordinator, musician, Sunday School teacher, Mobile District Bible Band president, and beloved Church Mother under Elder James Starks, Jr.

She leaves to cherish her memory, five beautiful children, Alfreda Delaine Stevens (Floyd), Dorthea Maria Miskel (Roscoe), Charles Anzerlo Williams, Nannette Loretta Smith, and Marriane Virginia Williams; siblings, Emma Jean Leggett, Burnell Williams (Gerald), Annie Luree Leggett, John Lonzo Leggett (Brenda), Millie Ann Flowers (Edward-deceased), Ronnie Joel Leggett (Angelica), Janice Rozelle Reed (Andre); best friend, Bernice Austin (Alphonse-deceased); seventeen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, three godchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family members and close friends. She is dearly loved and will be missed by all.
