Obituary for SFC Alcea Steels Braggs, US Army (Retired)

PSG Alcea Steels Braggs was born July 10, 1933
to Lillian Clark Colston and David Braggs. He was
the second child to this union. He exchanged this life
for eternal peace on Saturday, January 27, 2024.
Mr. Braggs was an active and lifelong member of the
Catholic Church. At an early age he was baptized at
Heart of Mary Catholic Church, and attended St.
James Catholic Church. For the past decades, Mr.
Braggs has been a faithful member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic
Church, where he served as the Extraordinary Minister for the past
twenty years. He was a member of the Good Will Organization.
Mr. Braggs received his formal education from A.F. Owens
Elementary School, St. James Catholic School, and he graduated
from Josephine Allen High School in 1950. He was a graduate of
Carver State Technical School, with a major in Business and Bishop
State Community College (Southwest Campus) with a major in
Accounting.
On July 28, 1950, Mr. Braggs enlisted in the United States Army, and
he was stationed in Germany from 1960-1963 and 1966-1968; Japan
from 1953-1955; Vietnam War from 1962-1963 and 1968-1969. As
a decorated soldier, Mr. Braggs fought in the Korean War and
Vietnam War, and he received many awards for bravery and service
to his country, including the Purple Heart (two awards), National
Defense Service Medal (w/OLC), Korean Service Medal, Good
Conduct Medal (four Awards), Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam
Campaign Medal (w/Device), Army Commendation Medal (two
Awards), Bronze Star Medal, Presidential Unit Citation – Army (four
Enlistments). He was a lifelong member of the Disabled American
Veterans (DAV). Mr. Braggs retired from the United States Army on
December 1, 1972.
As a civilian, Mr. Braggs was employed with the United States Postal
Service for eighteen years, and he retired from his federal
government position in 1990.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lillian Clark Braggs
Colston and David Braggs; and his brother, Alphonse Braggs, Sr.
Mr. Braggs leaves to cherish his fond memories, the love of his life and
devoted wife of over sixty-six years, Sadie Maria Fields Braggs; sister,
Roslyn Braggs Ezell; nieces: Belinda Daniels of Decatur, GA, devoted,
Darlene L. Braggs of Killeen, TX, Josselyn E. (William) Fredd of
Fairburn, GA, Nancy Mackie, Judge Moria (Mark) Lyons of Chicago,
IL and devoted niece, Marsellette Washington Riggins, Betty Buford,
Sharon Buford all of Mobile, AL and Regina (Arnold) Mayberry of
Biloxi, MS; nephews: Alphonse (Lisa) Braggs, Jr. of Jacksonville, FL,
Marshall Ezell of Atlanta, GA, Larry Buford of Mobile, AL, Frank
(Virginia) Buford of Surprise, AZ and Gerald (Deborah) Buford of
Helena, AL; devoted grand-niece, Karen (Leroy) Raine of Mobile, AL;
devoted great-great-nephew, Leroy Raine, III of Mobile, AL;
sister-inlaw, Annie Braggs of Sacramento, CA; cousins: Della Brown of
Laurelton, NY, Esther McGears of Albion, MI, Jacquelyn (Charlie)
Humphrey, Unita (Donald) Ray, Delma Clark and Freddie Clark all of
Jackson, MI, Tyrone Johnson of Semmes, AL and Donald Johnson of
LaPlace, LA; Godmother, Cecelia Lavinghouse of St. Augustine, FL;
Godchildren: Ellen James of Mobile, AL, Dr. Tiffany Robinson-Mosley
of Atlanta, GA, Stephanie M. Mosley of Los Angeles, CA and Nathan
T. Mosley, Jr. of Mobile, AL; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins,
