Obituary for Alee K. Saulsberry
Alee Knight Saulsberry was graced with 94 years of life on this side of heaven. She ran the race marked out for her by her Heavenly Father, and transitioned to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, February 16, 2020 at Community Care on Palms in Riverside, CA, under the love and care of her daughter, Jeannette. She was a beautiful and loving Woman of God to all and will FOREVER be in our hearts.
Alee was the first of three daughters born to the late Willie and Callie Knight in Mobile, Alabama on July 26, 1925. She was a devoted daughter to her parents, caring for both of them in their later years until the Lord called them home. She was also a devoted sister to the late Ella Mae Dickinson (Earl) and the late Mildred Thomas (Nathaniel) and the late Mable Dozier. She often spent time with her sister Ella Mae in Grove Hill, Alabama and travelled with her to places like New York, Washington, DC and Maryland. Alee, affectionately called Nana Leesie, by her many nieces and nephews, cherished the special bond she had with all of them. When Nana-Leesie called, they would answer. When she said that's it, that was it. Alee also enjoyed and loved spending quality time creating memories to last a lifetime with her dear cousins.
Alee adored her family. She particularly loved and cherished being a mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her children, grandchildren, and
great grandchildren absolutely adored her and have all blossomed under the amazing love she poured out on them. Alee's life was marked by love! She loved God and she loved people. She was known for saying “Love Is As Love Does”. Because of the love she gave to so many, she was often the recipient of other's love. Alee loved being surprised by her children and grandchildren, and could be seen jumping up and down shouting for joy when they would pop up on her doorstep unannounced all the way from New York or California.
Alee was educated in and a graduate of the Mobile School District.
eco As her parents had done, Alee joined Truevine Missionary Baptist Church at an early age, where she joined the Usher Board, and attended and taught Bible School. When Alee surrendered her life to the Lord she could often be heard saying, “I'm done playing Church”. Alee became devoted to God and spent time on her knees praying for her family and becoming a student of the Bible, marking it with highlighters from cover to cover. She could often be heard singing some of her favorite songs like, “Jesus on the Main Line”.
For several years Alee resided in New York where she worked and provided strong support to her family. Her children later followed her to NY when they finished school in Mobile, Alabama and began their family up north. Alee loved spending time with her children and grandchildren during this time. Alee returned to Mobile in 1970, where she became employed at Mobile Infirmary Hospital and assisted in the Open Heart Surgical Suite. Once she retired, her life was devoted to caring for her parents until they went to Glory. Being the caring, loving, spiritual woman that she was, she then turned her zest for life towards helping her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, other family members, friends, and volunteer organizations.
Alee was predeceased by her son: Robert W. Washington (Paula), and sisters Ella Mae Dickinson (Earl), Mildred Thomas (Nathaniel) and Mable Dozier.
She leaves behind to cherish her memories: Her Daughter: Jeannette (Trevor) St. Hill; Grandsons: Pastor Robert E (Sabrina) Washington and Nathaniel Washington (Jessica); Granddaughters: Michelle Webb, Tayhesha (Alfredo) St. Hill-Madrid, Tresa M. St. Hill, Dana Washington and Danielle Porter: Great Grandchildren: Monet, Isaiah, Elijah, Asiah, Kendall, Malaya, Daija, Breona, Victoria, Antonio, and Marianna; Great Great Grandchild: Elyana, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and longtime friends.
