Obituary for Alonzo Yelling Jr.

Alonzo Yelling, Jr., age 81, transitioned May 25, 2020. A native of
Atmore, Alabama, he was the eldest son and middle child of Alonzo Sr.
and Eunice Cavanaugh Yelling. He was raised in Mobile and attended
Martin Luther Lutheran School and graduated from Josephine Allen
Institute. He was a devoted, longtime member of Hope Chapel AME
Zion Church, serving in many capacities, including Steward Board and
Official Board Member.
In 1958, a “double date” with a friend marked the beginning of a legacy
of love. Mary Burnett became Mary B. Yelling on August 3, 1962, and
to this union, two children were born. Alonzo received an Honorable
Discharge from the United States Air Force in 1966. After serving his
country, he settled in Warrensville Heights, Ohio, until returning to
Mobile in 1975. In 1995, he retired from E.I. Dupont & Co.’s
Agricultural Chemical Plant in Axis, AL. He spent his retirement years
loving and caring for his family, friends, and church. Known as the
“King of All Trades,” he showed his love for others by serving as a
caretaker, the “fry daddy,” the “driver” and “Mr. Fix-it.”
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alonzo Yelling, Sr. and Eunice
Cavanaugh Yelling; sisters: Altheris Yelling McConico, Rosa Yelling
Fogg and Netholia Ann Yelling Plummer; and his brother, Cavanaugh
Yelling, Sr.
Alonzo leaves to cherish his memories his wife of fifty-seven years,
Mary B. Yelling; children: Carolyn (Errol) Watts and Alonzo, III
(Brenda) Yelling; sisters: Grace (Leonard) Wyatt, Hattie Johnson,
Irmatean (Willie) Watson and Carolyn Davis; brother-in-law: Willman
Plummer; sister-in-law: Iris (Herman) Taylor; grandchildren: Marcus
(Kaleena) Watts, Errol (Danielle) Watts, Dr. Vandrea Watts and Kayla
Watts; great-grandchildren: Isaiah, Makenna, Makenzie, Jadon, Kendall
and De’Jah; “adopted” children: Denise (Frank) Alexander, Angela
Robinson and Shannon Moorer; devoted friends: James (Jackie)
Montgomery and Timothy Broadus; and a host of nieces, nephews,
cousins and friends.
Mr. Yelling will lie in state from 1:00pm to 5:00pm, Saturday, May 30, 2020 at the Irene J. Small Family Center, 950 South Broad Street, Mobile, AL 36603. A private funeral service will be held at 1:00pm on Sunday, May 31, 2020. However, the funeral may be viewed live at www.smallsmortuary.com.
