Obituary for Arithia Marshall

Arithia Samuel Marshall affectionately known to many as "MaMa" was born February 6, 1930 to the late Mattie Lee and Hugh Samuel in Evergreen, Alabama. She was a graduate of Southern Normal School in Brewton, Alabama and she also attended Tuskegee Institute and Indian River Community College. In 1950 she married Rudolph Marshall (who preceded her in death) in Columbus, Georgia. They traveled extensively with the United States Army and retired to Boynton Beach in 1962. Upon her arrival she joined Daise Temple Church of God in Christ where she Served faithfully in many capacities and offices until her death. Arithia loved and had a heart for all people. She was especially fond of children. Concerned with the daily well being of " latchkey" children in her immediate community she along with Sarah Coston began the Boynton Beach Child Care Center in a small room in the Wilson Recreation Center with ten children. This program grew and thrived and later became a federally funded Headstart Program that is still in operation today. She served the center and generations of children as the Director of Teachers for over 35years and retired in 1996. She is preceded in death by her brothers Hugh Jr., Lewis, Bill, and Quitman Samuel, sisters Marjorie Jackson, Sally Mae King and Roberta Floyd, sons Edward and Christopher Marshall. She is survived by her children Samuel Marshall (Joanne), Victor Marshall and Estelle McKay (Curt). Also cherishing her memory are brothers Aaron Samuel (Annie), Edward Samuel (Ethel) and Arnold Samuel. Sisters Bernice Snowden, Gladys Williams (Willie) Lillie Mae Edwards and Sue Vines (Willie), Sister-in-Law Adrene Lewis. Daughter -in- law Cheryl Marshall, two God-daughters Usheka Ireland(she raised as her own) and Shavonne Pitts. She also leaves 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A visitiation will be held on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. until the 11:00 funeral hour at Second Bethelehem Missionary Baptist Church, Hwy 29 N., Brewton, AL.
