Obituary for Charles Vincent Taylor Sr.

Charles Vincent Taylor, Sr. was born May 5, 1945 in Mobile, Alabama to the union of the late Arthur and
Maxine Taylor. Charles departed this life on April 9, 2021. He was anointed and prayed for his
family members with his son Charles Jr. in his last hours.
Charles V. Taylor, Sr. was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Maxine Taylor; three
brothers: Herbert Taylor, Kevin Taylor (Dino) and Adolph Taylor, Sr.; three sisters: Dorothea
Huggins, Maxine Beavers (Dr. William Beavers), and Mary Arthurine Hassan (Alfred); mother-in-
law, Cleo Lee; brothers-in-law, Thomas Reed, Herman Lee, Kalvin Lee, James Lee, Sr. and
Alfred Lee, Jr. and one sister- in- law, Tammy Lee.
He is survived by his devoted wife of fifty years, Mrs. Diane Lee Taylor; and his loving children:
Charles Vincent Taylor, Jr. (Ameshia), JeWanda Lowe (Dr. Marvin Lowe), and Carlos Taylor
(Meredith); his grandchildren, Joshua Meggs (Kylie), Kearia Anthony (Nicholas), Kiyanna
Taylor, Marvin Jayden Lowe, Jace Lowe and Sebastian Carlos Taylor; his great-grandchildren,
Haylee and Nicholas Anthony, Jr.; three sisters: Addie Reed, Iona Hargrave (Charles), and
Aurelia Chestang (Dr. Leon Chestang); his father-in-law, Alfred Lee, Sr.; his brothers-in-law,
Lawrence Huggins, Reginald Gulley, Cleon (Shara) Gulley, Dennis (Avia) Lee
and Kelvin Lee; sisters-in -law, Ethel Taylor, Claudette Lee, Marilyn Lee, Mary Jordan- Lee, Cathy Lee and Sandra Lett; godson,
Christopher Williams; a host of nieces, nephews and devoted friends including Josh Williams,
Bill (Mary) Packer and Alonzo (Jennifer) McCord; a special lady that he called Madea (Leona
Singleton) whom he called daily and loved dearly; and friends and caretakers, Willie James
McMeans and Mary Trainer. Also, he had a long time pet, Cleatus.
Charles was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. He was a 1963 graduate of
Central High School. He furthered his education at Lawson State College and Carver State
Vocational Technical College where he obtained a degree in Welding and Auto Body
Mechanics. He was the first African American welder to be hired 1 st class at Ingalls Shipyard.
He was also the first African American ever hired as a welder at Mobile Pulley Works, Inc. He
retired after working there for twenty- eight years.
Charles loved spending time with his family at the Taylor home on Mon Luis Island. Charles
enjoyed shrimping and boating. He had a nurturing personality with a beautiful spirt that would
welcome you with a big smile. He loved people and was dedicated to the Civil Rights
Movement. He participated in the 1965 March from Selma to Montgomery better known as
“Bloody Sunday”.
Charles was a member of the Comrades Club, Inc. He made history when his two sons became
active members of the organization with him. Charles’ favorite time of the year was Mardi Gras.
He was a stellar member and always sold numerous tickets for the Comrades Ball and other
festivities.
Charles would always show his generosity by greeting you with a smile, saying thank you and
never leave without saying “I love you”.
