Obituary for Curtis M. Flakes Jr.

Mr. Curtis M. Flakes, Jr., a native of Fort Pierce, Florida and a resident of Mobile , Alabama,
departed this life suddenly on Saturday, April 13, 2024. Curt was born December 17, 1972 to
the union of Deborah Anderson Flakes and Curtis M. Flakes Sr.
Curt, a cradle Episcopalian was sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked as Christ’s own forever at
his Baptism at St. Simon Episcopal Church, Fort Pierce, Florida. He was confirmed at The
Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Mobile Alabama. Curt, a former Acolyte and Lay
Reader was an avid student of the Bible often being sought out by his family and others to
explain certain Biblical readings. His Bibles were marked up, worn and tattered from their
constant use. Curt was extremely proud of a mission trip he took to Moldova, Europe.
Curt, an intelligent and well spoken person, possessed a strong passion for knowledge. An avid
reader who read everything he touched. He graduated from Shaw High School, Mobile,
Alabama. Following in his parents footsteps, he received a B. S. Degree in Zoology from
Alabama A&M University. He also attended Florida Coastal Law School, Jacksonville, Florida,
Spring Hill College, Digital Marketing studies, and Bishop State Community College, Mobile,
Alabama.
Curt, an accomplished athlete, played football for the Municipal Raiders,under the record setting
Bill Mann, Shaw High School Rebels, under the legendary Coach Terry Curtis, and the Alabama
A&M University Bulldogs. Curt loved distant running and going for long walks, two activities he
participated in his entire life.
Growing up, Curt was a member of Jack and Jill of America and their Le Beautillion Militaire,
Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Culturama, and Mobile Area Mardi Gras Royal Court.
Curt’s early work life was highlighted by positions with the University of South Alabama’s
biological research laboratories and The Florida Bar Association. At his death, Curt was
employed as a sales consultant specializing in grant resources.
Curt is survived by a loving daughter Ashley Flakes Steger, Birmingham, Alabama, his loving,
devoted, and supportive parents, Deborah and Curtis Flakes Sr., a devoted and loving brother,
Kyle Branch Flakes, Mobile, Alabama, aunts, Bettye Broadnax, Upper Marlboro, Maryland and
Latricia Walker (Tommie) Austell Georgia, devoted great aunts, Fannie Burden, Mobile
Alabama, Sylvia Flakes, Meridianville, Alabama, Loretta Allen, Montgomery, Alabama, Hazel
(Lorenzo) Tolbert, Camp Hill, Alabama, Elsie Ligon, Atlanta, Georgia, uncles Trosky (Corlis)
Davis, Atlanta, Georgia, Raymond Bailey, Elmer Jack Bailey, Mobile, Alabama and Clifton
Davis, Como, Mississippi. He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Mattie Bailey and Elmer
Jack Bailey, Sr, Geneva Whitaker, and Solomon Flakes, Jr. He was blessed by a host of

cousins, many playing a major role in his life: Daphne (Lionel) Smith, Delicia (Carl), Fuller, Alice
and Velma Diaz, Anthony Burden, Jr. , Warren (Madonna) Burden, Ruth (Otis) Ramseur,
Michelle (Sammie) Grace, Charo (Robert) Jefferson, Jennifer (Frank) Little, Vanessa (Richard)
Whitten, Clifton Burden, Bridgett Tolbert, Tanya Mercer, and other relatives and friends.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Episcopal Church of the
Good Shepherd Scholarship fund, 605 Donald Street, Mobile, Alabama 36617, in Curtis’ name.
