Obituary for Deborah Elaine Pettway

On May 14, 1957 a daughter was born to the union of Hollice and Rose Mary Pettway Sr. Deborah Elaine Pettway entered the presence of God on January 21, 2019 at 9:40PM in Houston, TX. She was being cared for at the Houston Methodist St. Catherine Long-Term Acute Care Hospital campus in Houston, TX. Deborah is preceded in death by her father, Hollice Pettway Sr., brothers Michael Aaron Pettway and Kenneth Vincent Pettway.
Deborah leaves to mourn her passing, a loving and devoted family, Mother - Rose Mary Pettway of Mobile, AL, Sister - Beverly Pettway of Houston, TX, Brothers - Hollice Pettway Jr. (Deborah) of Houston, TX, and Charles Pettway of Houston, TX, Aunts - Almeda Dockery of Houston, TX, Patty Smith of Mobile, AL, and Regina Lawrence of Portland, OR, Uncle - Ronnie Bettis of Florala, AL. Deborah also leaves five nieces, three nephews, three great nieces and six great nephews along with a host of other relatives and friends.
Deborah became an active member of the Greater Mount Olive Baptist Church #2 at the age of 6 years old under the leadership of Pastor J. B. Weaver. Deborah lived a Christian life throughout her childhood and adult life and served in various capacities in church throughout her life. Deborah served as a Sunday school teacher in the Youth Department, as the 1st Vice President of the Mission Department of Mount Olive Baptist Church #2 and as a member of the Vocal Choir under the leadership of Rev. Hubert Baker. Deborah served as a member of the Eleanor Chapter #62 Order of Eastern Star and worked in the youth department of the 1st Eastern Shore Congress of Christian Education.
Deborah Elaine Pettway attended Texas Southern University where she pledged the distinguished Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from Texas Southern University in Houston, TX and her Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Keller University in Atlanta, GA. Deborah worked as a financial analyst with the IBM Corporation in Atlanta Georgia close to 20 years before moving back home to Mobile, AL where she continued to work for IBM while also helping her parents. After retiring from IBM, Deborah started her own Bookkeeping Service where she continued to do the types of things she enjoyed. Deborah became an active member of Toastmasters in Mobile and always talked about how educational this membership was to her.
Before leaving Mobile to attend Texas Southern University, Deborah attended W.P. Davidson High School in Mobile, AL where she completed her education through the Mobile County Public School System.
Deborah Elaine Pettway will be laid to rest on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 in Mobile, AL. Visitation will be held from 10:00AM – 12:00PM funeral hour at the Greater Mount Olive Baptist Church #2, 251 N Lafayette Street, Mobile, AL. Interment will follow in Lawn Haven Cemetery, Theodore, AL.
The Pettway Family would like to thank the Houston Methodist Lung Transplant Team for their CARE of Debbie through her journey. The cards, visits, phone calls and prayers helped Debbie and our family through a difficult journey and we want to thank you all. Deborah Elaine Pettway is being cared for by the staff of Small’s Mortuary in Mobile, AL and Paradise Funeral Homes in Houston, TX.
