Obituary for Doris Jean Steward (Phelon)

Doris Steward was born on September 24th, 1937, to the late Willie and Virgina Phelon in Elberta Alabama. She was baptized and accepted the Lord Jesus Christ at an early age. She was called home by an almighty God on April 6th, 2023.
Doris married the late Jesse Steward in Holy Matrimony in 1956. She had a heart for helping people, especially ones with health issues. Doris worked at South Baldwin hospital as a nurse for over 25 years and during that time she provided private home health care and cleaned homes as well to provide for her children. Doris loved to cook and taking care of her children was her pride and joy. Her health took an immediate decline in 2010 and she was no longer able to care for herself, other families, nor her children. At that moment instead of providing healthcare, she needed healthcare. God and her children became her caretakers for the last 13 years of her life. She was a feisty, beautiful, strong, outspoken mother who fought peacefully until April 6th, 2023, when she passed the torch to her only daughter. She was a loving MOTHER, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, sister, and friend who she proceeded in death by her parents (Willie and Virginia Phelon), sisters (Gertha Lee Brooks, Elouise Miller, Willie Nell Evans) and brothers (Willie Phelon Jr., Aaron Mitchell, Clint Phelon)

Doris is survived by her amazing, devoted children Jeffrey N. Steward (Laticia), Robert L. Steward (Roberta), Alfred R. Steward (Ann), Rodney L. Steward (Aretha), Steve Steward (Kelly), Albert J. Steward, Darlene Steward, and Keith E. Steward (Marketa); her siblings Jesse E. Phelon, Lola K. Robinson and a devoted brother Alfred R. Phelon; (15) grandchildren, (18)great grand (2) great great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephew.
During her journey she encountered many loving nurses, caregivers and doctors. She became good friends with one of her devoted caregivers, Mrs. Lisa Smith, who went beyond her assignment.
Special friends Mrs. Essie Edwards, Mrs. Alice Lewis, Mr. Willie Smith
