Obituary for Frances Smith-Wilson

Mrs. Frances Carey Smith-Wilson - December 2, 1914 - June 13, 2007, a longtime employee of Atlanta Life Insurance Co., died at a local hospital on Wednesday, June 13, 2007. She was 92. She was born to the union of the late Rev. John & Christine Smith on December 2, 1914. Mrs. Wilson began her long and active career as a Dietitian with Providence Hospital before entering into the profession of insurance with Atlanta Life Insurance Co. in 1947. While there, she enjoyed 46 years of dedicated service as an Agent and Staff Manager, of which she served as Manager for 3 years and Assistant Manager for 10 years until she retired in 1989. During her long and active career, Mrs. Wilson belonged to numerous clubs and organizations, including The 50 Plus Club at Emanuel AME Church, The Progressive Workers Club of the Federation of Woman's & Youth's Clubs of Mobile, and she served on the Board of the City Federation of Women's & Youth Clubs and the Juliette Chapter 613 OES for 34 years. She was a devoted member of Metropolitan AME Church where she served on numerous church boards and auxiliaries, including the Trustee Board, President of Presidents, President. of the Daughters of Allen, Class Leader, and the Missionary Board. Mrs. Wilson was preceded in death by her parents, the late Rev. John & Christine Smith and one brother, Willie Smith. Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Bertha Smith-Wooten of Grand Bay, and four generations of nieces and nephews including four nieces, Evelyn Taylor, Sacramento, CA, Beatrice Peyton, Vera Willis, and Carolyn Lewis, all of Grand Bay. Aunt Frances was blessed to have 3 great nieces including Wanda Forrest, Tensy Smith and Felecia Willis of Grand Bay, and 4 great nephews, Anthony Smith and Claude Willis, both of Mobile, Archie (April) Smith of Chicago, IL, and Freddie Willis of Irvington, and a host of other nieces, nephews, and cousins. She had 3 Godchildren, Dana Maxwell of Covington, GA, Charles (Norma) Maxwell of Mobile, and Walter (Nicole) Ellis of New Orleans, LA. Mrs. Wilson had many close friends, including several devoted: Mrs. Lola Washington, Mrs. Mary Kennedy, Mrs. Claudia Johnson, Mrs. Alice Causey, Mrs. Lela Robinson, Mrs. Ethel Ellis, Mr. Clarence Bonner. Mr. John Campbell and Ms. Elaine Harris, who worked tirelessly as her caregiver during her illness. Visitation will be Saturday, June 23, 2007 from 9am-11am. Funeral service at Metropolitan AME Church in Mobile. Burial will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery in Grand Bay. Dignified and professional services are entrusted to SMALL'S MORTUARY, INC.
