Obituary for Gertrude Buskey

Gertrude Robertson Buskey was born on March 8, 1936, in Demopolis, Alabama and departed this life on August 15, 2019.

She was preceded in death by her Aunt Gertrude Bailey and Uncle Robert Bailey who reared her in Mobile, Alabama. Gertrude was a member of St. Louis Street Missionary Baptist Church where she was a member of the P.A. Williams Missionary Society, organized the D.Y. Davis Teachers Training class and directed the B.B. Williams Herald Choir.

Gertrude was a 1953 graduate of Central High School and a graduate of West Virginia State College. She received a Master of Arts Degree and an AA certification from the University of South Alabama. Gertrude served as an Educational Specialist, Assistant Principal, choir director and teacher. She wrote the words to the Blount High School Alma Mater. Gertrude retired from the Mobile County Public School System in 1986 after 31 years.

She was a member of the E.T. Belsaw Federated Club and an American Red Cross volunteer. Gertrude was a life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and received the 50-year member certification from AKA in 2005. She served as Basileus of Delta Theta Omega Chapter. Other affiliations include, life member of the NEA, AEA and Mobile Retired Teachers Association. She enjoyed cooking and raising flowers, especially African Violets.
She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 59 years, Charles Buskey, Jr; daughter Karen B. Williams (Mobile, AL); son, Attorney Charles D. Buskey (Washington, DC); grandsons, Steven (Clara) Williams and Kendall Williams (Houston, TX); Sisters-in-law, Joyce B. Royal, Wanda (Freddie) King; Brothers-in-law; the Honorable James(Virgia) Buskey, Martin Buskey (Mobile, AL) ; two great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, devoted Mary Shepard and Susie Michael.
