Obituary for Gwendolyn Marie Sykes (Bowie)

Ms. Glenda Sykes Bryant, a native and lifelong resident of
Mobile, Alabama transitioned peacefully on Saturday, October
16, 2021.
Glenda was born on September 8, 1949 to the union of Emmett
Sykes, Sr. and Martha Sylvester Sykes in Mobile, Alabama.
She was the ninth child (baby girl) of nine surviving children.
At an early age Glenda gave her life to Christ and was a
devoted Christian and a woman of great faith who loved the
Lord. She found great comfort in the gospel and her
relationship with her Heavenly Father and Savior Jesus Christ.
She was a longtime serving member of the Revelation
Missionary Baptist Church.
Glenda led an amazing life accomplishing things that made a
huge impact on everyone around her. She started her career
serving her community in the healthcare field until she retired.
But she didn't stop there. She always had a nurturing spirit that
led her to mentor and extend her love to children in the Foster
Grandparent Program of Mobile, Alabama.
Glenda married the love of her life, Columbus Allen, Sr. to this
union three beautiful children were born: Geneva, Columbus
and Derrick.
Glenda was preceded in death by her parents, Emmett Sykes,
Sr. and Martha Sylvester Sykes; three brothers: Ralph Sykes,
Emmett Sykes, Jr. and Willie Sykes; two sisters: Lagertha
Sykes Hawkins and Martha Lorraine Sykes Hamilton.
Glenda is survived by her three loving and devoted children:
Geneva (John) Allen Belser of Mobile, AL, Columbus
(Kurtessa) Allen, Jr. of Kileen, TX and Derrick D. Allen of
Mobile, AL. After raising her children she was there to extend
her motherly love to Marcus Sykes. She is also survived by one
brother, Augustine "Jimmie" Sykes (Velma) of Baton Rouge,
LA; two sisters: Geneva (John) McCall and Betty Williams of
Mobile, AL. She is also survived by eight grandchildren:
Vinecia, Columbus, Jade, Derrick, Derrica, Dajuan, Dedrick
and DaKariah and fifteen great-grandchildren; a host of nieces,
nephews, cousins, in-laws, other relatives, friends and
co-workers.
