Obituary for Haggie Burnett Pettway (Pettway)

Ms Haggie Burnett Pettway was a native of Boykin, AL. and resident of Mobile, AL. She was born on June 21, 1936 to parents Vinnie Pettway and Sidney Parker. She was raised surrounded by loving family, extended family, and strong community bonds while enduring Alabama’s very strict Jim Crow Era that included seizing children for labor purposes. She had given her life to Jesus as a young adult. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Gees Bend.

She proudly graduated from Boykin High School, near top of the class of 1955; jokingly claiming, “She was the smartest one there.” In her earlier adult years she moved to Mobile, Alabama. She worked various jobs, while raising her family. She had been a hard worker her whole life, as recognized by her devoted children, family and friends.

Lovingly referred to as Dear (Mudear, or Dea), she enjoyed the simplest pleasures, such as watching basketball (short shorts basket ball). She also loved going for car rides (anywhere just ride); dancing (the horror of a mom dancing with her teenagers); swimming (lord-don’t get that hair wet); cooking, and truly loved sitting back and watching her family enjoy themselves.

In the company of loving family members, at the tender age of 85, Haggie Burnett Pettway departed this earthly life, on Wednesday, May 04, 2022. She is gone from our sight but she will forever be in our hearts and in our memories. She’s now at peace, in her creator’s bosom. She was preceded in death by her mother, Vinnie Pettway; her father, Sidney Parker; and her oldest son, Murriel Lewis Pettway.

She leaves to cherish her memories Devoted children: Gwendolyn Lenora Pettway of Boykin, Alabama, Tommy Pettway, Curtis V. P. Pettway of Mobile, AL; Angelia Pettway-Hollin and Linda Ann Pettway of San Diego, CA; Maurice Pettway of Slidell, LA; a devoted daughter-in-law, LaVon Pettway(Maurice) Special Mention: Her “Auntees” Florea Brown of New York, NY, Milee Coleman of Mobile, AL; “Sisters” from other mothers - Mrs. Rose Gaines (partners in crime), Mrs Carrie Majors of Mobile, AL; host of devoted relatives, friends, and acquaintances.

Many thanks and love to all of the friends that: lent an ear, held our hands, and offered a shoulder to cry on (still needed).
