Obituary for Hannah Rodgers Gaston

Mrs. Hannah Mae Rodgers Gaston, was a native of Lower Peachtree, Alabama (Wilcox County), and a resident of Mobile, Alabama. She was the third child born to the union of David, Sr., and Willie Lee Rodgers on October 29, 1924. She was affectionately known to those that loved her as “Madear” and “Junior Madear.” On January 23, 2019, MaDear fulfilled her calling and purpose in this life, and is now resting in the arms of Lord.
Mother Gaston accepted Christ early in life and began her walk with Christ at New Mount Moriah Baptist Church of Lower Peachtree, Alabama. She later moved to Mobile and has been a resident here for over 70 years where she became a very devoted member of Greater Union Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the Reverend F.L. Bush. Until her illness, she served in various capacities, which included serving as a member of the Choir, Treasurer of her Sunday School class and a member of the Missionary.
Always a mother that put her children first, MaDear took on various forms of employment to take care of her family. The true epitome of strength, gratefulness, determination and love, who never saw her disability as a handicap. MaDear was a true “mama” to many. A gracious woman of particular taste, that loved fried fish, homemade cake and watching westerns and action movies, she lived her life honestly and without regret.
She was preceded in death by two loving sons, Howard Gaston, Jr. and James Edward Gaston; parents David Sr. and Willie Lee Rodgers; three sisters; Carrie Howard, Amamie Weatherly, and Earlean Poole and; four brothers: Adolphus Rodgers, David Rodgers, Jr., Clyde Lee Rodgers and Eddie Lee Rodgers.
She is survived by five children: Willie Lee Stanley, Mobile, Alabama, Charles Gaston, Sr., Los Angeles, CA, Willie Ray Floy (Pastor Brenda) Gaston, Sr., Minnie Pearl Gaston, Cheryl Elizabeth (Albert Sr.), both of Atlanta, Ga; Forty-four grandchildren, three devoted: Barbara Ann Gaston, Shevierre Zackize, Sr. (Donitta), Gaston, Kiara Brianna (Kendrick) Ligon; 75 great-grandchildren; 100 great great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, two devoted, Collis (Mary) Dickinson, who she raised as a son, and Julia (Pastor Samuel) Wood; two devoted brothers, Roosevelt Rodgers and Edgar Rodgers, both of Lower Peachtree, AL.
