Obituary for Ivory Herron Hill (Grayson)

Ivory Herron Hill, age 91, was born on
January 13, 1933, to Choicy and Louise
Allen Grayson in Mobile (Plateau),
Alabama. She exchanged this earthly life
for eternity on Friday, February 16, 2024.
Ivory was a third generation Africatown
descendant. Her grandfather, Polee
(Lucy) Allen, was one of 110 West Africans
captured and illegally transported to
America, specifically Mobile, Alabama, on the last known slave
trade cargo ship, the Clotilda.

Ivory was a member of Canaan Missionary Baptist Church, where
she served in the Missionary Department and as a deaconess. She
retired from the Mobile County Public School System. She was a
paraprofessional and bus driver at Augusta Evans School. She also
retired after five years as the program manager of the Our Mother
of Marcy SAIL Center at the Plateau Community Center. She was
also known for her creative abilities. She was a seamstress. She was
a giver to anyone that was hungry or in need. She blessed family
and friends with her soul food and delicious cakes.

Ivory was preceded in death by her husband, George Herron, Jr.;
former husband, Cornelius Hill; son, Reverend Victor Herron, Sr.;
and siblings, Robert and Marion Grayson, and Mary Pogue.
She leaves to cherish her memory: two sons, Gary (Patsy Ludgood)
Herron, Sr., and Terryl Herron of Atlanta, Georgia; one daughter
Wanda Pat Henderson of Mobile, Alabama; eight grandchildren
Cary Herron, Kenneth (Angel) Herron, Gary (Darnisha) Herron,
Jr., all of Mobile, Alabama, and Victor (Mandie) Herron, Jr., and
Victoria Herron, both of Houston, Texas, Jenay (Greg) Ballard,
Terryl Herron, Jr., and Therron (Shani) Henderson, all of Atlanta,
Georgia; 14 great-grandchildren, Jazmyn, Iya, Bryanna, Camryn,
Bryan, Kamil, Victor III, Lathaye, KeAnna, Tyler, Tyrion, Trinity,
Ta’Miracle and Ka’Ron; one great-grandchild, Skylar; devoted
nieces, Yolanda (Reverend Desmond) Smoot, Rhemie Pogue, and
Valerie Pogue; nephews, Orlando Pogue, Paul Pogue, and Reverend
Bernard (Rhonda) Bryant, Sr.; one brother, John (Vivian) Bacot,
Sr.; sister-in-law, Alberta Grayson; daughters-in-law, Vanessa
McDaniel Herron; former Jenella Catlin Spears and Iris Avery
Herron; former son-in-law, Kenneth Henderson; a beloved best
friend, Mary Tucker; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives,
