Mr. James V. Brooks was born to the union of James and Doris Turner Brooks on July 2, 1945 in Citronelle, Alabama. At an early age he accepted Christ as his savior. He served in the United States Army as an E-5 Sergeant. As a well-respected educator, he served in the Mobile County Public School System (MCPSS) for 27 years. His services included: Assistant Principal at Phillips Preparatory Magnet and Satsuma High Schools, and Principal at Mobile County Training Middle and Calloway-Smith Middle Schools. He retired as textbook/testing coordinator for MCPSS in 2010. James was affiliated with several organizations: a fifty-year member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., a Worthy Patron Excelsior Chapter #63, Order of Eastern Star, Member of Olive Branch Lodge #1, Past Master of Benjamin Lodge #486, and a former member of the following: Palestine Temple #18, United Supreme Council 33°, Mobile Area Mardi Gras Association and Patriot Social Club. He was also a member of the Gulf City Golfers Association. James developed Parkinson’s in 2009; to maintain strength and coordination, he boxed at both Gulf Shores and Saads Health Care Rock Steady Boxing for Parkinson’s.
James was preceded in death by his parents, James and Doris, and his sister Cherise Brooks. He leaves to cherish his memory a loving and very devoted wife of 19 years, Carmen Johnson Brooks; one son, James V. Brooks II of Conyers, Georgia; four daughters: Cherie Flott of Mt. Vernon, Alabama, Donna Debuce of Mobile, Alabama, and Marcia and Courtnee Brooks of Conyers, Georgia; one brother, Charles Brooks of Citronelle, Alabama; two sisters: Patricia (Albert) Walker of Lithonia, Georgia and Jonita (William) McCree of Palm Coast, Florida, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; one aunt, Mary Morrison of Citronelle, Alabama, and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
