Obituary for Jessie Shears Roberson (Shears)

Jessie Shears Roberson – was a native of Chambers County, Alabama and a long-time resident of Mobile, Alabama. She was born September 14, 1934 to the union of the late Shaffer and Vesta Shears. She exchanged this life for eternal joy on Wednesday, July 17, 2019, at Maple Crest Health Center, Omaha, Nebraska.
She was introduced to the life of Christ at Rehope Baptist Church in Chambers County. After moving to Anniston, Alabama she became actively involved at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. Jessie always enjoyed going to Sunday School and church. She graduated from Cobb High School in Anniston, Alabama in 1952.
In 1956 she earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Alabama A&M University in Normal, Alabama. That same year, she married her college sweetheart, Earl Roberson Sr. on December 23. She later earned a Master of Science in Education from Alabama State University. After working and teaching for 40 years as an Elementary School Teacher in the Alabama school system, Jessie retired in 1996 from Westlawn Elementary School.
Jessie was a former member of Stone Street Baptist Church, where she was an active, involved member, serving in many capacities. She continued her serving as she became a member of State Street A.M.E. Zion Church, picking up where she left off by presiding over Vacation Bible School, singing in the Cathedral Choir. Jessie was the Sunday School Superintendent, a part of the Missionary Department, Member of the Lay Council and a part of numerous activities within the church.
Jessie was active in educational, social and civic organizations. She was a life member of numerous organizations including Alabama A&M University Mobile Alumni Association; Jack & Jill Incorporated Associate Group and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Other organization affiliations included: National Council of Negro Women, Alabama Retired Teachers Association and Red Hatters of Mobile.
In addition to her parents, Jessie was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband of 49 years, Earl Roberson, Sr.
Jessie was a soft spoken, humble Christian who worked diligently throughout the community. She helped others without fanfare, comment or earthly reward. Jessie would say, “I’m just doing what I’m supposed to be doing.” She used her talents to make things for others. She was a dedicated wife, mother and friend. She truly loved working with kids and would do what she could to help anyone. Her presence will be missed and her memory shall forever be cherished by her two loving children, Earl Roberson, II and Katrina Roberson (David) Lyons; Omaha, Nebraska; a niece, Sharon Roberson (Lorin) Harris, that was reared and loved as a daughter; Birmingham, AL; 5 adorable grandchildren, Nia, Malcolm, Xavier and Kalynn Lyons, Omaha, NE; Mya Roberson, Mobile, AL.; goddaughter, Taneka Roberson (Walter) Hicks, Gardendale, AL; devoted cousin Equilla C. Roberson, Mobile, AL, and a host of other relatives and friends.
