Obituary for Joseph Enoch Clarke

Joseph Norman Enoch Clarke was born in Miami, Florida on January 28, 1930 to the union of the late Norman and Vera Clarke. Joseph spent his childhood in Key West, Florida. He accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of St. Peterson Episcopal Church in Key West. Joseph graduated from Fredrick Douglas High School and briefly served in the U. S. Army and upon returning to Key West, he was the first African-American Broadcaster for radio station WKWF. Shortly after, he joined the U. S. Air Force and proudly served his county for 23 years. Joseph Clarke exchanged his life for eternity on January 30, 2010. Joseph Clarke was also a former employee of the United States Postal Service and Mobile County Public School System. Affectionately known as "Clarke", he loved jazz music and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Clarke was always known for his low voice and quiet demeanor, but not to be fooled, he was a strong man. Joseph was preceded in death by his wife; the love of his life, Dessie Clarke of 39 years, sisters; Gloria Matson and Ella Joynes. He met Dessie Rembert and to this union five devoted children were born, William (Cheryl) Clarke of Stafford, Virginia, Michael (Evelyn) Clarke, dedicated and loving daughter, Regina Clarke-James, Pamela (Marion Pettway) Clarke and John (Tanya McNeil) Clarke, all of Mobile, Alabama. He leaves to cherish his loving memories, four sisters, Georgiana Phillips, Margaret Harley and Roxie Strange of Phoenix, Arizona and Sarah Clarke Curry of Key West, Florida. Three brothers, larry (Camilla) Clarke, of Miami, Florida, Charles (Lillian) Clarke, of Gary, Indiana and Carl (Ossie) Clarke of Key West, Florida. Devoted sisters-in-law, Bessie Hicks of Corona, New York, Alice Hunter, Deborah Bendolph, Julia Rembert, Rose (Willie) Greene and Leona Harris. Devoted brothers-in-law, Roosevelt (Mattie) Harris of Corona, New York, Walter (Ethel) Harris, Eddie (Brenda) Rembert of Mobile, Alabama, Alexander (Deborah) Rembert of Bronx, New York and Kenneth Steele of Houston, Texas. Devoted grandchildren: Dominique Reid, Michael Clarke, Jr., Britany Clarke, India Clarke, Jordon Clarke, Christopher Agee, Jocarra Clarke James, Rodney Clarke-Hunter, Jr., Jontazia Clarke, Johne David Clarke, Joseph Carlyon Clarke and Megan Clarke Moore. Two great-grandchildren, Jaelyn and Julian Reid. One God-Child, Paige James and a host of neices, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews. A host of friends, three devote, Joe "Coyote" Gamble, Vernon Clemons and Joseph Banks. A devoted caregiver, LaMia "Me-me" Kennedy. His remains will lie in state at Small's Mortuary on Friday, February 5, 2010 from 1:00PM until 8:00PM and on Saturday, February 6, 2010 after 10:00AM until the 12:00 Noon funeral hour at Bethel AME Church, 714 Savannah Street, Mobile, AL.
