Obituary for Leona Black (Odom)

Leona Odom Slaughter Black departed this life on December 17, 2020. She was born on October 16, 1927 to the union of John Amos and Mattie Bass Odom in Whatley, AL in Clarke County.
Leona confessed Christ at an early age and was a faithful member of the Indian Ridge Baptist Church. Upon getting married and relocating to Mobile she was initially a member of the Bayside Baptist Church and later joined St. Peter Baptist where she remained a member until her passing.
Leona married Roger Slaughter on February 19th 1947 and to this union four children were born. Throughout her life Leona enjoyed cooking and was good at it. Many times when coming to town to visit both her children and grandchildren would request that she prepare special dishes to include collard greens, fried chicken and her special gumbo. Music and dancing were also things that Leona were fond of and rarely could one enter into her home without hearing the radio playing. Her favorite artist was Al Green and if one of his records came on she was up and ready to dance.
Leona was preceded in death by three of her four children: Cecelia Ann Veal, Henry Charles Slaughter, and Ida Mae Gilmore; two grandsons; Jessie R. Gilmore and Derek M. Lett; and three siblings; Jessie Lee Chapman, Amos Odom and Margie Grant.
