Obituary for Lula Mae Brundidge (Butler)

Lula Mae Butler- Brundidge transitioned this life on April 8, 2020 at Covenant Hospice Care of Providence Hospital in Mobile, Alabama. Lula was born on March 24, 1943 in Sweetwater, Alabama to the Union of Dave and Laura Butler. Her religious experience began in Leroy, Alabama when as a child she gave her life to Christ and was baptized at St. Union Baptist Church. The family moved to Wilmer, Alabama in 1957 where she joined Moffettville Missionary Baptist through Christian Experience. Lula married her college sweetheart, Wallace Brundidge in August of 1967. They moved to Merritt Island, Florida where she joined Greater St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorship of Rev. W. O. Wells. There she served many faithful years as the official Church Clerk responsible for maintaining the church’s Membership Archives and attesting to all official business recordings. In addition to this duty, she also served as a trusted Fiancé Office Teller responsible for supporting accurate tithes and offerings accountability.
Lula was a graduate of Wilmer Consolidated School, class of 1961. She matriculated to Alabama State University where she earned a Bachelor’s of Art degree in English/English Literature. After graduation she moved to Florida where she accepted a teaching position at Titusville High School teaching Advance Placement English and English Literature. Also, she sponsored Delta Omega, a Black Social Club, and was actively involved in school fundraisers and was an active supporter of the school’s Athletic Program. She was among the first Black teachers to work at the high school level in Brevard County, Florida. She as an educator for 37 years and retired from the Brevard County School System in June of 2005.
Lula was a sport’s addict and a Seminole’s fan. During football and basketball seasons she was glued to the TV set. She knew the games, she knew the players and could quote stats. She was an avid reader and loved giving books as gifts. She loved staying connected with friends. She was a strong believer in the concept of family and was adamant about keeping family traditions. Though she loved her family Lula was a Floridian for more than fifty years and was strongly attached to her life and friends there.
Lula leaves to cherish her memory five sisters and one brother: Ruby (Clyde) Dumas, Etta Davis, Mary (Daniel) Lovely, Rosie Butler, Linda Butler and brother, Dave Butler, Jr. Three family adopted sisters; Jewell Carter, Aniece Smith and Shirley Bradley.
Seven Nieces and Nephews: Garry (Wanda) Dumas, Jarrod Dumas, Katrina Davis, Brandon (Keisha) Davis, Candi Butler, Brian (Jamelia) Butler, and Todd (Diane) Lovely. Ten great nieces and nephews: B. J. Butler, Secily Dumas, Ryan Dumas, Kyle Dumas, Collin Dumas, Aaliyah Lovely, Jordan Slones, Shelby Waters, Dylan Wright, Jr., and Dallas Wright . Four godchildren: Kyle (Heather) Peete, Phillina (Anthony) Tookes, Jori C. Thomas and Alicia Ki Goldston. Five very close girlfriends: Ruby Borens, Nan Holloway, Lillie Newsome, Barbara Peete, and Betty Rackston. Caring and Devoted friends: Hubert Peete, Joseph Bradley and Ed Nichols. She also leaves to cherish her memory a host of loving cousins, friends and acquaintances.
