Obituary for Rose Mary Stone

Rose Mary Stone was born on August 6, 1945, in Mobile, AL. Rose Mary earned her wings in a peaceful transition surrounded by her family at the home of her daughter and son-in-law. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents: Henry & Lily Richardson and Carrie Chalmers & Samuel Nichols, Jr. Her loving husband of over 50 years: Leslie “Juke” Stone, III; and her adored grandson: Leslie Bernard Stone, Jr.
A proud 1964 graduate of Central High School, Rose Mary attended Bishop State Community College. She served as a passionate Educator for Mobile County Public School System where she retired after 20 years of service. Rose loved teaching, mentoring and nurturing our future generations.

A graceful, devoted and loving woman of the Lord, and her family, Rose Mary married the love of her life, Leslie Stone on August 21, 1965. She would often joke with her family that she, “a Wildcat married a Whippet”. To their beautiful union they share the joys of their loving and devoted children and their families: (daughter) Chante’ (Plez) Hendrix, Sr., grandchildren: Plez, Jr. & Olivia Paige; and (son) Leslie Bernard (Jasmine) Stone, Sr., grandchildren: Deavon, Nyla, Logan Maria, and Dylan; great-grand: Deavon, Jr. Rose Mary is survived by her caring siblings, sister-in-law’s and Godchildren: Carolyn (Theodore) Parrish, Robert (Carolyn) Chalmers, Trudy (Greg) Jones, LaNelle Foster, Kevin (Thalia) Chalmers, all of Memphis, TN., Darlene Parker of Little Rock Arkansas, Ledell Chalmers of Kenosha, Wisconsin, Obidiah Chalmers of Elkhart, Indiana, Teresa Slater, Catherine Collins, Pamela Nichols, Dorothy Green of Mobile, Arlena (Terry) Hill of Atlanta, GA, and Tomeyka (William) Gundrum of Destin, Fl; her stepmother Gracie Mae Nichols of Mobile; and sister-in-law’s: Margaret Ann Powell and family, of Niagara Falls, New York and Leatrice Nichols and family, Mobile, AL; God-children: Davida (Samuel) Cunningham, Sr., Alana Carter and Novia Williams. Also, to cherish her memory are a host of special nieces, nephews, cousins and friends: Devoted families: Carter, Glover, Snell, Portis, Howard, Rutledge, Bowers, Sullivan, Wallace, Simon, Evans, Gooden, Cunningham, Anderson, Warmack, William & Coker, Hendrix, Battiste, Love, Brady and the McCree’s.

A faithful Christian, Rose dedicated her service to First Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as founder of the Women’s Prayer Brunch Ministry, former Vice-President of the Pastor’s Ministry, a Matron and former Vacation Bible School Teacher. With a servant’s heart, she enjoyed preparing hearty meals during special occasions both at church and at home; and would often deliver meals to ill family and friends. With a love for culinary arts, among Rose Mary’s most famous dishes included her: gumbo, chicken tetrazzini, shrimp creole, collards, dressing, ooey gooey and Italian cream cake, and yes, her blueberry crunch! Rose was so proud of her family and loved them infinitely! She taught her children early about the beauty of Christ, and made every effort to be one of their biggest cheerleaders in the audience cheering on her children and grands in whatever they participated in. She also enjoyed seeing people happy, and often gave so much of herself to listen to others in need sharing prayers and spiritual counsel.

Despite Rose Mary’s illness with Alzheimer’s, she remembered to echo the beauty of God’s Kingdom in her eloquent words of praise! This beautiful woman of God was a magnificent wife, mother, mother-in-love and grandmother; and our beloved and her radiant smile will be with us always! In her spoken words, “God is Amazing All the Time!”
