Shirley Mae Mumford Willis was born July 12, 1955 to Richard and Marie Mumford. On August 28,2020, she exchanged her life here on earth for her heavenly wings. She was preceded in death by her father, Richard Mumford.

She graduated from Toulminville High School in 1973 and from Alabama A&M in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in Social Work. Most of her career was spent in early childhood education at Dumas Wesley Community Center where she was the Director of Day Care, helped with the operation of the community outreach programs and help to build strong children in the Crichton community. The latter part of her career was spent rebuilding the lives of broken men and women at Keeton Correctional—a transitional facility for those who had been in the penal system. In both of these capacities, she poured herself into the lives of others as a counselor and advocate for those who did not have a voice. Her life was spent helping to mend the hearts and lives of broken people.

Shirley had a smile that drew people in, and her joy made you never want to leave her presence. She was a comedian at heart and had the powerful ability to speak the truth in love through laughter.

Her world revolved around her family—her husband, her children, her grandchildren, and her extended family. Once you were a part of her world, she would never let you leave. She made it a point to call and check on those she loved every day.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of 42 years, Milton Willis Jr, five children, Jabaria (Charles) Dent, Jamana (Chris) Love, Mobile, Al Janae (Maurice) Beard, Dallas TX, Jadrian Willis, and Jeremy Willis also of Mobile, Al. She also leaves five stepchildren, Kim Willis, Milton Willis III, Reginald Willis, Dion Willis, and Tanya Willis. Mother, Marie Mumford, Mobile, Ala. Five loving siblings, Berdia Foster, Centreville, VA, Viola (Mack) Williams Greenville, AL , Richard (Vanester) Mumford, Jr., Sant Antonio, TX, Sharon Mumford, Manassas, VA, and Allen Mumford, Powder Springs, GA . One Sister in-law Clementine Freeman, Mobile, AL.

She also leaves behind her greatest treasures—her grandchildren—Jessica, Chelsea, Meagan, Christopher, Braylen, Angel, Ashton, Sharayon, Kennedy, Londynn, Chris, Jr., Madison, Maurice, Jr., Marlee and Adrian.

A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends also remain to share in and cherish having her in their lives.

It is with my deepest sympathies to the family. I am so happy to have known you and to work with you in the past years, also to have you to be the first to be a part of my child’s education. Rest in Heaven Mrs. Willis you’ve earned your wings. Cora Crenshaw
