Obituary for Thomas Berk Smith

Mr. Thomas Berk Smith was born September 29, 1934, in Safford, AL. Born to the union of the late Joe Smith Sr. and Queenie Pettway Smith. He passed away in the early hours of Friday February 2, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Thomas was a member of various organizations and a pillar of the Hillsdale Community. He was a devoted Steward at Smith Memorial AME, where he served on multiple boards. He was a spiritual man, that participated in numerous church functions. Thomas was a man that loved the Lord whole heartedly. He served as a Worshipful Master of the Masonic Lodge 115 in Plateau, AL. He was a leader, family man, provider, protector, and mentor. Thomas was an Army Veteran and later worked as truck driver for 18 years. He went on to work for Akzo Nobel Chemical Company where he retired after many years. Being the provider he was, he couldn’t sit still and became a Security guard for Twin City Security Services for 3.5 years.

He leaves to cherish his memories with wife Debra Smith of 28 years; one son Anthony (Brenda) Smith of Montgomery, AL; two daughters Vida (Sherman) McCants of Pensacola, FL; Tiffany Martin. Two stepchildren, Corwin Scott, and Shameka (Alvin) Smith. One sister Emma Collins of Detroit, Michigan; five brothers: Ceaser (Maud) Smith of Detroit, Michigan; Joe (Susanne) Smith, of Redford, Michigan; John (Geneva) Smith of Las Vegas, Nevada; Dan Smith of Detroit Michigan. A devoted mother-in-law Elizabeth Hale. A host of grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Two God children: Christopher Hale and Nicole Simmons.
