Obituary for Venetia Matthews Vickers

Venetia Matthews Vickers was a caring and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She departed this life suddenly on July 6, 2022. She was born to James Matthews and Mildred Holcombe on July 3rd, 1954, in Fairhope Alabama.

At an early age she confessed Christ as her savior and united in faith with the Christian Valley Baptist Church in Fairhope Alabama. As her spiritual journey unfolded and she relocated, she joined the First Baptist Church of Quindaro, in Kansas City, Kansas. As her faith developed, she sang with the choir and shared her faith in that fellowship. When she retired to Fairhope, Alabama she reunited with Christian Valley Baptist Church. She served until her demise. Her testimony for her faith was reflected through her service to her family, her community, and many friends.

Venetia attended the public schools of Fairhope and graduated from Fairhope High School in 1972. After graduating, she matriculated at Alabama A & M State University where she majored in Education and pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She was also an active member of the Royal 16 Social Club in Fairhope, AL. After completing her bachelor’s degree, she worked in various career paths. She then relocated to Kansas City, Kansas where she went back to college to obtain her medical license to become a registered nurse. She was employed for 10 years as a nurse and administrator at Bethany Hospital in Kansas City, KS. As she advanced in her career, she became the head nurse of the dialysis center at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She worked as a nurse and administrator treating and caring for patients for 30 years.

Venetia was always taking care of others, especially her family who relocated to Kansas City, Kansas. Her love was reflected in taking care of her nieces and nephews who she dearly loved. Her home was their home, and they always felt secure because she had welcomed them as her children. Preceding her in death were her parents, her sister, Janice (Willie) Williams, her brother Michael Safford and God mother Ruby Dale.
