Obituary for Winfred Carlton

Born to Jimmy L. Carlton and Bessie Carlton in Lower Peachtree, Alabama, Winfred left home at an early age and moved to Cleveland, Ohio to be with family. Later, he left for Louisville, Kentucky to marry the love of his life–Julia Mary Creighton-Carlton–who precedes him in death. They were married for 47 years. Wimp as he was known by everyone, moved back to Alabama for a very short time until he relocated his family to Los Angeles, California.

After moving to Los Angeles and experiencing hardship, Wimp connected with a kind gentleman who helped him get to Watts, California with Uncle Joe and Aunt Jessie changing his life for the better. He got a job as a busboy at Marineland–thanks to a family member–and later built a career at Mullin Lumber Company where he worked for 15 years. In 1998, Wimp retired from Crenshaw Lumber Company in Los Angeles.

Wimp loved his family and friends. While living on the west coast, he enjoyed barbecuing–he was well known for his barbeque–entertaining friends, and playing games like bid whist, spades, dominoes or in-between. He always kept a house full of guests, including bonus children who he loved dearly.

Winfred was a faithful member of Life Church until his health declined. On May 16, 2022, he passed away peacefully at his home.

Winfred has 11 siblings and is preceded in death by: Gussie Bright, Johnny Carlton, Arnett Carlton, Willie Gray Cleveland, Donnie Carlton, James Carlton, Louis Carlton, Lendsey Carlton, Laura Mae Nobles and Floyd Carlton, Bonus sister/cousin Marion Carlton-Lesurer.

Winfred was a devoted father and grandfather to four children and six grandchildren. Children: Reginald Carlton, Los Angeles, CA; Poncheta Carlton, Eight Mile, AL; Bridgett Bettison (Arnold) Eight Mile, AL; Darron Carlton, Eight Mile, AL Grandchildren: Lorean Strauther, Brittney Bettison, A’Brie Strauther, Briana Bettison, Braxston Carlton, and

Special thank you to Winfred’s special friend, Ms. Mary McCoy, who was there for him until the end. Whenever he asked her to come, she made sure she was there. We would like to thank everyone at Kindred Hospice, especially Ms. Lana. Winfred would light up whenever she mentioned Peachtree. Special thanks to Ms. Nina as well.
