Calvin Edward Pettway was born in Mobile, Alabama on September 10, 1951, the eldest son to the late Meridian Pettway Gamble and the late Calvin Benning. He transitioned to his heavenly home on Friday, August 24, 2018.
He was raised in Boykin, Alabama where he attended Boykin High School. After graduating from high school, he moved to Bridgeport, Conn in 1971. A few years later, he moved to Detroit, Michigan to seek job opportunities. While there, he gained employment with Daimler Chrysler. Years later, he relocated with the company to Ohio and worked there until he retired. After retiring, he moved back to Connecticut and relocated to Prichard, AL. He was a member of Peace and Unity Primitive Baptist Church, Prichard, AL under the leadership of Rev. Franklin Mc Million
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Ricky M. Pettway and Danny Coleman; paternal grandparents William and Margaret Benning; maternal grandparents Clay and Leah Pettway.
He leaves to cherish his memories a wife Nelphia Carey Pettway, his daughter Chandra Mc Clellan-Pettway, granddaughter Anayzha D. Cooper both of San Diego, Ca; three sisters, Mattie L. and Irene Pettway of Bridgeport, Connecticut, Machell Gamble (Neely) Clinton of Mobile, Alabama; four brothers, Willie G. (Michelle) Pettway of Bridgeport, Connecticut, Eddie B. (Ronneeke) Gamble III of Phenix City, Alabama, Yancey ((Jennifer) Coleman of Richmond, Kentucky and Jamie C. Pettway; his extended family; step daughter Verna Carey, step granddaughter Kierra Carey, step great-grands Kylie Rowe and Abigail Carey all of Mobile, Al; sister in laws Helen (Dave) Boykin Sr. Mobile, AL, Fannie Carey, Bridgeport, Conn; brother in law Calvin Carey of Bridgeport, Conn and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles cousins, other relatives and friends. Special thanks to the staff of Covenant Care and the staff of Providence Hospital (Covenant Hospice) of Mobile, Alabama.
His remains will lie in state on Thursday, August 30, 2018 from 5-8pm at Small’s Mortuary, Mobile. Services will be held on Saturday, September, 1, 2018 11:00 am, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Boykin, AL with the Rev. Franklin Mc Million officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
