Obituary for Phillip Watson Nelson

Phillip Watson  Nelson
Phillip W. Nelson was born October 31, 1938 in Chickasaw, AL to Herbert and Louise Nelson and exchanged time for eternity on June 22, 2017.

He grew up playing on the Chickasaboque River and after serving two years in The Koren War. He worked on the river in various positions. He started out as a deck hand and worked his way up to captain, during his years with Sim’s and Brothers Towing. The first boat he was pilot of was the Jeanie G. and then was the LU-ASH. He later became an employee of Mid-Stream Fuel Service and after 15 years as a valued employee he became a shift superior until retirement at the age of 65.
He always said that he learned what he knew by being on the river and as king question. He enjoyed sports, mainly baseball. The Atlanta Braves was his favorite team.


He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, Lucy Griffin, Addie L. Nelson, Olivia James and Mamie Bracy; six brother, Archie, Herbert, Robert, Walter, John and James.

He accepted Christ as his personal savior at an early age and was a member of the St. John AOH Holiness Church where he served as Deacon.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Anna L. Nelson; one son, Phillip (Felecia) Nelson; two daughters, Chandra Dickinson and Rosalind Nelson; five grandchildren, Carlos (Marquisha) Nelson, Gary Dickinson, Tabitha Dickinson, India (Dwight) Scott and Caleb Nelson; three great grandchildren, Karlos Nelson, Jazlen Williams and Lauryn Scott; one sister, Louise Edwards; one sister-in-law, Addie Nelson; a host of relative and friends.

His remains will lie in state 1-8pm Monday, June 26, 2017 at Small's Mortuary, Mobile. A visitation will held from 9am until the 11am funeral hour in the Small's Mortuary Chapel, 950 S. Broad St., Mobile, AL. Interment will follow in the Gethsemane Cemetery, Mobile, AL.
