Josephine  Finkley
Mrs. Josephine Finkley, age 88, a resident of Mobile, Alabama and a former resident of Prichard, Alabama, passed from her temporary home on Monday, August 7, 2017.

She was educated in the Mobile County Public School System and graduated as a member of the Class of 1947 from Mobile County Training School. She continued her studies at the Alabama State College Branch, now Bishop State Community College and later transferred to Alabama State Teachers’ College, now Alabama State University, and graduated in the Class of 1951. At Alabama State, she earned the bachelor’s degree and in later years, the master’s degree in Elementary Education. Mrs. Finkley retired in 1982, after 31 years of providing instruction in the Mobile County Public School System.

She was an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated until her health began to fail.

She received Christ at an early age at the Mount Olive African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, under the Pastorage of Reverend T.C. Gill. She was a faithful member of Hope Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, where Reverend Sanders Mason III is the pastor. Mrs. Finkley was active in a number of auxiliaries, including Sunday school teacher, Missionary Society, gospel choir, Altar Guild, as well as served as a delegate for the Annual Conference.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Ms. Ruby Hudson; father, James (Dude) Perkins; and grandfather, Joseph Hudson. She was also preceded by the love of her life of 63 years of marriage, Mr. Lester Finkley.

She is remembered with love by her daughter, Tanya (Dr. Terry) Hazzard and a sister, Mrs. Herbene McFarlan and one grandson, Jared, along with many other relatives and friends, including Ms. Tchelinda Finkley-Ely, Ms. Shirley James, Ms. Vonnie Young, and Mrs. Zarinah Harris.
Warmest thanks to the Hope Chapel family, Mrs. Annie Allen, Mrs. Myrtle Stallworth, and Mrs. Carrie Blunt for their constant prayers and concerns.

Her remains will lie in state on Friday, August 11, 2017 from 1-8pm at Small’s Mortuary, Mobile.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2017 from 9am until the 11am funeral hour at Hope Chapel AME Zion Church, 1644 Wolf Ridge Road, Eight Mile, AL. Interment will follow in Lawn Haven Cemetery, Theodore, AL.
