Obituary for Joyce Watts Jones Dr

Brenda Joyce Watts Jones - a native of Mobile, AL, former resident of Daphne, AL currently residing in Atlanta, GA departed this life Sunday, August 12, 2007 surrounded by her family. She was born to Rosetta and Vodie Watts May 14, 1952. Dr. Jones received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Dillard University, New Orleans, LA., and her Master's of Arts degree from Atlanta University and a doctor of philosophy degree from Georgia State University. Dr. Jones was the President of Atlanta Technical College, the first and only Africian-American female to lead a technical college in Georgia. Dr. Jones was an active and vital presence in her community. She served on the boards of Metropolitan Atlanta Neighborhood Development Association; the Fulton County Workforce Development Council, the City of Atlanta's Workforce Development Council; the RESA Board of Control; Good Choices; Project GRAD; and the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce Board on Education. She was also a graduate of Leadership Atlanta and the Regional Leadership Institute and a member of the Coalition of One Hundred Black Women. Dr. Jones was named an Outstanding Georgian, Atlanta's most influential women, Delta Diva and Trailbrazer of the year and one of Atlanta's preeminent educational leaders. Dr. Jones was a dedicated member of Cascade United Methodist Church, she was a founding member of the New Advent choir, a member of the SPPRC, and various other committees and ministers. She leaves to cherish her memories husband, and best friend, Morris; son, Brandon; stepchildren, Maurice, Marquis, Sheikla and Kaleisha Jones all of Atlanta; mother Rosetta Watts, father and stepmother, Vodie and Evangeline Watts, all of Daphne; four sisters, Barbara Martin, Montgomery, AL., Joan Royal, Karla Mitchell and Victoria Watts; three brothers, Vodie Watts, Jr., Vernon Watts, and Terrence Watts all of Daphne, AL, and two step-grandchildren. Visitation will be held Saturday, August 18, 2007 at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, Daphne, AL after 11am until the 1pm funeral hour. Interment in Jubilee Memorial Gardens. Dignified and professional services are entrusted to SMALL'S MORTUARY, 950 S. Broad St, Mobile, AL
