Obituary for Callie Lovina Crumpton

Callie Lovina  Crumpton
Callie L. Crumpton, 81, died November 11, 2017. She was born in Mobile, the daughter of William Compton and Lucretia Milligan.

She was educated in the Mobile public school system and graduated from Central High School. She earned a B.S. degree at Alabama State Teachers College (Alabama State University), a Master’s degree from New York University in New York City, additional certificate in History from the University of South Alabama, and a Laubach Literary Action Tutor Certificate.

Ms. Crumpton had thirty seven years of teaching and professional experience. Thirty-one of those were served in the Mobile County School System, the last twenty-three years at Baker High School. For eleven years at Baker High School, she served as Chairman of the Social Studies Department. Ms. Crumpton was elected to represent Baker High School as the Outstanding Teacher of the Year, 1985-86. That year her name was placed in nomination for the Alabama State Teacher of the Year. In other professional areas, she served as a Master Teacher for the University of South Alabama’s Student Teacher Program.

Ms. Crumpton continued to remain active after her retirement from the Mobile public school system in 1998. In 1999 – 2010 she was a History teacher for the Phoenix program, associated with the 100 Black Men of Greater Mobile, Inc. In 2005 she became a tutor for Goodwill Easter Seal of the Gulf Coast and volunteered with the Child Evangelism Good News Club after school program at John Will School.

Ms. Crumpton was a member of the board at Dumas Wesley Community Center. She was also a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as Church School Superintendent as well as a Church Sunday School Teacher. She also served as Assistant Sunday School Superintendent, Assistant Boy Scout Leader, and Assistant Director of the Extra Milers Tutorial Ministry.

She leaves behind her son Tharren Clark of Washington D.C. and brother William Compton of Biloxi.

Visitation services will be provided by Small’s Mortuary, 950 South Broad Street, Mobile, Al 36603 from 5pm 8pm, Friday, November 24, 2017. Funeral Services will not be held per Ms. Crumpton’s last wishes.
Graveside cemetery services will be held at Pine Crest Cemetery of West Mobile, 1599 Snow Road South, Mobile Al 36695 at 11am on Saturday, November 25, 2017.
