Obituary for Annie Sappington

Ann Douglas Sappington began my earthly journey on May 3, 1925 in Daphne, Alabama, delivered to the care of Elijah and Irene Douglas . At an early age, I moved to Cleveland, Ohio where on December 15, 1945 I married the love of my life, John Edward Sappington. To this union, two children were born. Our family remained faithful members of Lee-Seville Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio where I sang in the choir. Upon retirement, John and I moved back to Daphne, Alabama where we united with Mt Aid Missionary Baptist Church. I was the last surviving of seven children. I entered the pearly gates of heaven and went to eternal rest in my heavenly home on April 20, 2015. I was always labeled a “Busy Bee”. I was on my own at an early age and always found a way to make an income. I cleaned houses, cared for over 100 foster children, ran an in-home day care for over 100 children, sewed and still managed to care for my family whom I cherished dearly. Even after moving to Daphne, I continued my income venture. I cleaned the house of Jimmy Buffet’s mother, continued caring for foster and day care children, and sewing. Caring for children ended my house cleaning and my failing health ended my caring for outside children. My last venture was helping to care for my two youngest grandchildren whom I adored and fulfilled my promise to my husband on his death bed. Dementia took its toll upon me and my final days were spent at social functions at the Daphne Senior center with my daughter and youngest grandchildren by my side until I became bedridden after breaking my hip. It was there my earthly journey ended and I went to my eternal home with my daughter and youngest grandchildren close by. In my eternal life, I join my parents, Elijah and Irene Douglas; my husband and love of my life for over 55 years, John Sappington; my mother-in-law, Notie Mae Allen; all of my siblings, Charlie Douglas, Josephine “Peggy” Larry, Thelma Williams, Elijah “Vernon” Douglas, Joseph “Joe” Douglas, and Milton “Pete” Douglas; foster son, Brantley “Jimmy” Brantley. My earthly memories will be cherished by my loving and devoted family, son, D.K. Sappington; daughter/dedicated caregiver, Deirdre Sappington; three grandchildren, one dedicated, Courtney Sappington; dedicated caregivers, Deirryah Sappington and Erryia Sappington; “grandson”, Richard “Ricky” (Shevette) Davis; godsons, Theodore Davis III, Creston “Rashaad” Washington; devoted family, Essie Johnson, Tawnya (David) Heath, Lynda (Eldo) Davis, Johnnette “Tiny” Douglas, Barbara Jean Lee, Bill and Ethel Harris, Jerome (Brenda) Larry and Charlon Larry; devoted friends, Marie Malone, Barbara Ivey and Kitty Baker; special acquaintances, Arnetta Simms, Menola Laine and Lelia Smith; and a host of other family and friends. A viewing will be held on Friday, 24, 2015 from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm at Small's Mortuary, Fairhope. The visitation will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2015 from 9:00 am until the 11:00 am funeral hour at the Mt. Aide Missionary Baptist Church, 9470 Samuel Jenkins Road, Daphne, AL. Interment will follow in the Mt. Aide Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Daphne, AL. DIGNIFIED AND PROFESSIONAL SERVICES ENTRUSTED TO SMALL'S MORTUARY, 24336 HWY 98, FAIRHOPE, AL.
