Obituary for Helen Jackson

Helen L. Jackson Douglas, a lifelong resident of Mobile, Alabama, was born July 4, 1925, traded time for eternity on Thursday, September 24, 2009. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Douglas, her parents, Martha and Julia McCants Jackson, four brothers, Thomas, Martin, John and Charles Jackson, two sisters, Essemina Roberson and Henrietta Turner. She was a faithful and dedicated member of Bethel A.M.E. Church where she served on the Trustee Board, a member of the JTL Dandridge Social Aid Board, Bethel Boosters Board, Past Mother of the Seamen's Club, O.E.S. Juliette Chapter 613, Owner and Operator of the Don-Q Lounge (1947-1978), and one of the founders of the Krewe of Don-Q Social Club. Helen, favorably known as "Mrs. Don Q", "Firecracker" and "Nanny Helen", leaves a legacy of love to her niece/daughter, Stephanie (Darell) Rivers. Three sisters, Ruth Jackson Douglas, Julia Mae Jackson both of Mobile, Alabama and Margarite Washington of Los Angeles, California. Two grandchildren, Delvin Jackson and Adrienne Rivers, one great-grandchild, Carl Jackson. Six sister-in-laws, Ella Jackson, Helen (Overyette) Gray, Mary Douglas, Frances Douglas, Georgia Douglas, Rosanna R. Jackson all of Mobile, Alabama. Three devoted god-daughters, Alexis Herman Franklin of Washington, D.C. and Bernadette Jackson of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Pamela K. White of Mobile, Alabama, many others too numerous to list. She will forever be remembered and cherished for her kind and giving nature by her nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends along with her church family, members of the Don-Q Social Club and devoted friends, Thomas E. Greene, Myrtle Gayles, The McGlasker Family, Lula Booth, Cleove Rodriguez and Yvonne Woods. Her remains will lie in state will lie in state at Small's Mortuary on Friday, October 2, 2009 from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday, October 3, 2009 after 11:00 a.m. at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 714 Savannah Street. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until the 1:00 p.m. funeral hour. Interment will follow in the Pine Crest Cemetery, Mobile, Alabama. Dignified and professional services entrusted to Small's Mortuary, 950 S. Broad Street, Mobile, Alabama.
