Obituary for JESSIE MATTHEWS

The “Celebration of a New Life” was on March 14, 1936, when Jessie LeAnna Matthews entered this world. She was born to the loving union of the late Herman and Mrs. Irene Marie Steele, in the city of Prichard, Alabama. She attended Mobile county Training High School, Class of 1953. She served as a Cheer Leader. “Go Whippets”. In July of 1955, she was united in Holy matrimony to Theodore Roosevelt Matthews, and to this union three children were born. She accepted Christ at an early age as she was brought up in the fear and admonition of the Lord. Later in life she joined Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church where she was a member of the Matrons and Choir. She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore R. Matthews, Sr., parents, Mr. Herman (Irene) Steele, Sr., brothers, Rev. Herman Steele, Jr., Lemoyne Steele, sisters, Mary Alice Penick, Voncile York, daughter, Gwendolyn V. Young, granddaughter, Nicole L. Matthews, grandson, Rashad M. Young. She leaves to cherish her precious memories, one devoted daughter, Kristi Marie Matthews, Lebanon, TN; son, Theodore R. (Kaky) Matthews, Jr., Daphne, AL; sister, Annie C. West, Mobile, AL; sisters-in-law, one devoted, Lillie M. Woodyard, Prichard, AL; Hattie Bonner, Cleveland, OH; Ethel (Roosevelt) Besteda, Reynoldsburg, OH; brother-in-law, John Matthews, Prichard, AL; grandchildren, Ashley Matthews, Theodore R. Matthews, III, Fairhope, AL; great granddaughter, Autumn Matthews, Fairhope, AL; a host of other relatives and friends, one devoted, Corlis (Gail) Montgomery, Daphne, AL. Her remains will lie in state on Friday, May 1, 2015 from 3pm until 5pm at Small’s Mortuary, Fairhope, AL. Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2015 from 9am until the 11am funeral hour at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church 902 Daphne Ave. Daphne, AL. Interment will follow in Macedonia Memorial Gardens, Daphne, AL. DIGNIFIED AND PROFESSIONAL SERVICES ENTRUSTED TO SMALL’S MORTUARY 950 SOUTH BROAD ST.
