Obituary for Major Smith Jr.

Major Smith, Jr. was born March 27, 1948 to the late Major and Melvina Smith, Sr. in Mobile, Alabama. He transitioned to be with God on January 17, 2016 in Mobile, Alabama. He was a member of Canaan Baptist church of Mobile, Alabama and a Merchant Marine for 42 years.

Major was preceded in death by his parents, Major Smith, Sr. and Melvina Davis-Smith, his oldest sister, Gertrude Gamble and oldest brother, Alphonse Nicholas.

He will be forever remembered by his children, Roderick (Melanie) Smith, Sr., Michelle (Derrick) Lofton and Melissa (David) Cobbin; five grandchildren, Roderick Jr., Gavin, Mariah, Makalyn and Raine; one great grandson, Amond; a devoted ex-wife, Rosie P. Smith; godson, Kyle Bumpers; siblings, Christine Purnell, Geraldine Nicholas, James Nicholas and Mildred Lovelace; a host of nephews, nieces, great nephews, great nieces, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and friends, close friends, Edward Ankrom, Romie Bush, Fortune McCants (Humbug) Sonja Ingram and Darrell Sanders.

His remains will lie in state on Friday, January 22, 2016 from 1pm until 8pm at Small’s Mortuary, Mobile, AL. Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2016 from 9am until the 12pm funeral hour at Canaan Baptist Church, 863 Summerville St. Mobile, AL. Rev. Desmond Smoot officiating. Interment will follow in Whispering Pines Cemetery.
