Obituary for Margie Holmes

Margie Hafler Holmes, a native of Pensacola Florida and long time resident of Mobile passed from this life to the next on Friday August 22, in Chicago, holding the hands of her two sons, that she loved so much. Margie, known far and wide as the "Candy Lady", for the delicious fudge and pralines she so dutifully made for Prince of Peace Catholic Church, was 88. After retiring as a teacher at Head Start, she began a new career as Director of Child Care for the Service Center of the Catholic Social Services. She loved the Lord, was a devoted member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church and was also a member of their prayer group. She was preceded in death by a devoted husband of 62 years, well known Mobile jazz musician William "Billy" Holmes, Sr and son Harry Holmes, both of Mobile. Her survivors include her beloved children Annette "Cissie" Holmes, Frank H. Holmes Sr, both of Mobile, William "Butch" Holmes (Janis) of River Forest, Illinois, one sister, Juanita Hafler Eaton (Harold) of Mobile, two devoted daughters in law, Antoinette Crishon Holmes and Cassandra Caldwell Holmes, a loving "adopted" niece, Sheila Wilson White (Thomas) all of Mobile, eleven devoted grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, two nephews who loved her like a mother, Norman Holmes (Shirley) and Herman Hafler (Angeline), both of Pensacola Florida, seven other nephews, five nieces and a host of devoted and loving cousins, in-laws, "adopted" nieces and nephews and friends. Margie was a kind-hearted soul and was loved by many; she will be sorely missed. Her remains will lie in state on Friday, August 28, from 1 PM to 8 PM at Small's Mortuary, 950 S. Broad Street. Visitation will be at Prince of Peace Catholic Church starting at 9:00 AM on Saturday, August 29, followed by the Rosary. Mass of Christian Burial will we be at 11:00 AM. Burial will be in Catholic Cemetery. At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Margie's name to The Service Center of the Catholic Social Services, 555 Dauphin Street, Mobile, 36602. Dignified and professional services entrusted to Small's Mortuary, 950 S. Broad St., Mobile, AL.
