Obituary for Mary E. Carter

Mary E.  Carter
Mrs. Mary Evelyn Kirk Carter passed away peacefully on 2/12/19. She was born in Cleveland Ohio on 5/15/24 to Sally and Hosea Kirk in Cleveland, Ohio and was the eldest of thirteen children. She was raised in Mobile by her beloved "Nanny" and "Daddy", of whom she would speak fondly for the rest of her life. On 3/2/40, at the height of Mardi Gras season, she married Robert Lindsey Carter, a Mobile resident and leader in the community. They were privileged to raise three daughters, Marquita DeAlva Thorne and Barbara Jean Moore, both of whom are deceased, and Marquita Monique Carter. In addition to her capacity as a loving wife, mother and homemaker, she was also a business woman, having owned the Mambo Club and worked at AmSouth bank. She was a proud member of Big Zion AME Zion Church. Prior to her transition to Big Zion, she was a member of St. Mary's and Most Pure Heart of Mary for many years. Mrs. Carter leaves behind her daughter, Marquita Monique Carter, son-in-law, Christopher Caldwell, granddaughter, Jasmine Caldwell, grandson, Dyon Thorne, great-granddaughter, Dalaijah Thorne, a host of nieces, nephews and friends, and lifelong friend, Mr. Robert Lewis. The family will receive visitation on Tuesday, Feb. 19 from 1-8pm. The funeral will be held at Big Zion on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 11:00am. Interment will take place at Gethsemane Cemetery following the service.
